What is dehydration?

When the body loses fluids rapidly, electrolytes and other nutrients are lost, too. This fluid loss can result in dehydration.

Slight fluid loss can be caused by a number of things, including:

  • Exercise
  • Travel
  • Occasional alcohol consumption
  • Occasional morning sickness

Mild to moderate dehydration can be caused by the following:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Heat exhaustion

When the body loses too much fluid, it can no longer function properly.
